How to Calculate GSM of Fabric?

Here’s a list of the essential tools to calculate GSM of Fabric

1. Weighing Scale or Balance:

A precise and calibrated weighing scale capable of measuring in grams. Make sure the scale is zeroed before measurements.

2. Measuring Tape or Ruler:

Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure the length and width of the fabric. Ensure the measurements are in meters.

3. Fabric Sample:

A representative sample of the fabric you want to measure. The sample should be large enough to provide accurate measurements but doesn’t need to be excessively large.

4. Calculator:

A basic calculator or a device capable of performing the necessary mathematical calculations involved in the GSM formula.

GSM Calculation by Using a Formula:

Calculating GSM (Grams per Square Meter) in the textile industry is a straightforward process. Here’s a simplified step-by-step guide:

Formula: 

1- Weigh the Fabric:

Measure the weight of the fabric using a scale or balance. Ensure the weight is in grams.

2- Measure the Area:

Measure the length (L) and width (W) of the fabric in meters. Multiply these values to get the area in square meters.

Area = Length × Width

3- Calculate GSM by Formula:

Put the weight and area values of the sample into the following formula:

4- Result: 

The result will give you the GSM of the fabric.

Example:

  • Fabric Weight: 500 grams
  • Length: 2 meters
  • Width: 1 meter

So, in this example, the fabric has a GSM of 250 grams per square meter.

Things to Consider While Calculating GSM

Here are some tips to ensure precise calculations:

  • Keep all measurements in metric units. Use grams for weight, and meters or centimeters for length and width.
  • Use a calibrated and accurate weighing scale for measuring the weight of the fabric.
  • Use a reliable metric measuring tape or ruler to measure the length and width of the fabric accurately.
  • If the fabric has stretch properties, measure it in its relaxed state to avoid inaccurate readings.
  • Ensure consistency in units throughout the calculation. If one measurement is in centimeters, ensure the others are as well.
  •  Use the correct formula for the specific requirements. The standard formula is 

GSM= Weight of Fabric / Area of Fabric
