Definition:

Mercerization is a chemical treatment applied primarily to cellulose fibers, like cotton, to enhance their properties.It involves immersing the fibers in a concentrated sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) solution, which causes them to swell and restructure.This process increases the fibers’ strength, luster, and affinity for dyes. The treated fibers exhibit improved tensile strength, reduced shrinkage, and a smoother surface, making them ideal for high-quality textiles and clothing. Mercerization revolutionized the textile industry by ensuring uniform dye absorption, vibrant colors, and enhanced fabric performance. It remains a standard practice in textile manufacturing for producing superior-quality fabrics and garments.  Aside from its application in textile finishing, the Mercerization Process is also used in the production of cellophane and mercerized cotton thread.

Process Description

Preparation:

The fabric is prepared by scouring to remove any impurities like oils or waxes that could interfere with the mercerization process. This ensures that the fabric is clean and ready to absorb the caustic soda solution effectively.

Mercerizing:

The core of the process involves immersing the fabric in a strong solution of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). This is usually done under tension, as the tension helps to keep the fibers straight and maximizes the effects of the treatment. The caustic soda causes the cotton fibers to swell, straighten, and become more lustrous and stronger. Neutralizing:

Washing and Drying:

Finishing:
